How to take care of your physical & mental health during the COVID-19 pandemic

We are overcome with panic, fear and confusion during this pandemic and it is on my heart to provide people with some tools to stay centered, grounded, and prepared in a holistic manner. I reached out to my dear friend, Sasha, an expert in herbal remedies, who will advise us on the best remedies for this type of virus. Paired with some easy and accessible tools and exercises that we can practice to raise our vibration, center our mind, relax our body and be present in the moment during this stressful time.

The COVID-19 (Coronavirus) is thought to spread mainly from person-to-person. By those in close contact (within about 6 feet) and through respiratory droplets produced when an infected person coughs or sneezes (which can be inhaled through a non-infected person). Mindfulness

Many people confuse meditation and mindfulness as the same thing; I would say it is from the same family but holds a different context. Mindfulness is the practice of awareness, staying present in the moment and not focusing heavily on the past or future. When you are stuck in future or past thinking, you are stuck in fear and anxiety. With the COVID-19, this is creating a lot of anxiety and fear for what the future holds. The thought process I would advise is, “I accept we are in challenging and unknown times, I am going to practice being aware, safe and preventative as well as stay present in the moment and focus on staying relaxed and enjoy life”. Mindfulness is about accepting the situation you are experiencing, as well as accepting that you don’t have full control over the situation. Mindfulness can be reached through staying present in the moment (making that strong and consistent choice) and using your breath to bring you back to the present moment (breathing out the past and future and breathing into the present moment). Per current research suggests that people who practice mindfulness long term find it easier to unlearn fear responses and remain fear-free. This is worth practicing!

Meditation

Meditation is the practice of quieting the mind and releasing yourself from distractions for 10-15 minutes (daily preferred). Some like to use music or sounds to bring them to this state of being, and others choose to meditate in silence. Meditation calms the nervous system down (which then releases anxiety, panic, and fear), clears the mind, and creates feelings of love and joy. Research has shown that meditation can significantly reduce anxiety and other stress disorders. FREE meditations: https://www.ascendyoursoul.com/meditations

Eating at home “Return to Wholeness”

During the challenges in my life I try to see the silver-lining. In my house we say “Karma”, which means “we receive this negative moment because we know it is balancing something bigger and proving me with a lesson and wisdom”. With COVID-19, I wonder if this is returning us to our homes and our families, (returning us to our roots for reconnection). I also wonder, is this an opportunity to eat more at home, return to wholefoods, increase our gratitude for Mother Earth and what she provides us and be grateful for one another. Take this as an opportunity to cook more and enjoy wholefoods that will raise your vibration and heal your body.

Crystals to keep you calm

Crystals are known to have healing effects and the ones best for releasing anxiety and calming the minds are: Citrine, Blue Lace Agate, Lepidolite, Rose Quartz, Black Tourmaline, Danburite, Amethyst, Kunzite, and Kyanite. You can place the crystal in your home (an area that everyone passes frequently) or keep the crystal in your pocket.

CranioSacral Therapy

Craniosacral therapy is a gentle, non-invasive, hands-on healing modality that focuses on the wave-like rhythmic pulse that goes through the entire body. Throughout the journey of life, we encounter and endure stress, strains, and trauma that become trapped in our bodies. When our body holds onto the stress, strains, and trauma instead of releasing it, our tissues and fluids are no longer in harmony, thus our core body system becomes compromised. When there is disharmony in the body this will result in dis-ease in our body and symptoms of pain, discomfort, emotional, physical, and behavioral issues will arise. CranioSacral calms the nervous system down, as well as clearing the mind. During these unknown times, it’s important to focus on self-care and our mental health. Psychotherapy/Coaching

During a pandemic it’s easy to abandon our mental health and loose our sense of self. Sometimes having a professional to work through our fears and irrational thoughts, can bring us back into balance. I believe in a holistic approach to psychology and emphasizes the importance of viewing the person as a whole being made up of many parts (physical, mental, emotional & spiritual) working together as one. I have been exploring, living, and teaching an integrated approach to healing for more than 15 years by using an Eastern approach to healing. Natural Remedies for Anxiety/Stress/Depression

L-Theanine– rejuvenate, relax, enhance the ability to think, and change mood. Good for anxiety and stress relief.

Gaia Stress Response- Stress Response supports the body in reacting to stress in a healthy way. With Wild Oats grown on Gaia's own certified organic herb farm, plus Ashwaganda and Holy Basil, this unique formula helps calm and nourish an over-worked nervous system.

Nerve tonic– instant stress and anxiety relief

Lemon balm -it tones and balances central and peripheral nervous system function and is extremely nutritive to these essential systems.

Remedies that won’t work to kill the virus but may calm you.

Burning Sage- I see many posts about “burning sage” and that it will keep you protected from the COVID-19. Based on the information determined thus far, this is not an airborne bacteria (Research shows burning sage kills 94% of airborne bacteria), this is a virus that is spread person to person. In this case, burning Sage will not protect you, but may clear the energy in your home and within you. I advise using sage for the purposes of clearing yourself, your home and calming your mind.

Herbs that may very beneficial for treating Covid-19:

Sasha Violette is an herbalist with a passion for the natural healing properties of medicinal plants. She has utilized herbal remedies and natural healing techniques for her family and loved ones for over a decade.

Understanding that this virus targets the respiratory system we are able to highlight numerous herbal remedies that can assist in boosting the immune system and supporting our respiratory system if we do become ill. One should always consult a medical physician for actual medical advise. The information found below is for reference and educational purposes.

Astragalus

Astragalus is an adaptogen herb because of its ability to protect the body from emotional stress. It is very supportive for deep immune function by increasing disease fighting antibodies. It also contains antioxidants that support our respiratory system; it's used to treat shallow breathing by many herbalists and TCM practitioners . You can see why Astragalus could be very beneficial against Covid-19. Another benefit is its anti-viral and immune supporting properties.

Studies have shown Astragalus to help restore immune function for cancer patients. It's really quite powerful. You can get it in tincture or capsule form.

Baical Skullcap

Baical Skullcap is an amazing herb full of flavonoids and anti-viral properties. In Traditional Chinese Medicine it's prescribed for coughs that produce thick phlegm and fevers among other conditions. We know one of the major issues with Covid-19 is an awful cough with very sticky and thick phlegm. Baical Skullcap seems like it could be very beneficial for this reason alone.

Lobeila

Lobeila is a strong antispasmodic herb which is very beneficial for respiratory distress. It's an expectorant and respiratory stimulant. It helps open airways by relaxing the muscles in your bronchial tubes. It's also helpful for thinning out really thick phlegm. It can be toxic if you use too much so be sure to follow the instructions with the Lobelia you purchase. I prefer the tincture form and diluting in water.

Osha Root

Osha Root is a potent anti-viral and is used for various respiratory infections including Pneumonia. It is an expectorant and respiratory stimulant and can bring some true relief for congestion. It is also very supportive for those suffering from shortness of breath. It is used in both dry and wet coughs and is powerful when it comes to thinning out extremely thick mucus.

Olive Leaf

Olive Leaf is one of my absolute favorites. It's a simple but power herb with antibacterial and antiviral properties. I've given it to my children since they were about 10 months old. Studies suggest that olive leaf extract has the ability to inhibit the replication of viruses such as respiratory infections, influenza and colds. It's wonderful for our immune system and something I always keep in my house. I even have my family gargle it daily to prevent viruses.

Prevention is the major key in this. Things you can do to try to prevent Covid-19.

Elderberry syrup or tincture daily. Elderberry is rich in flavonoids and works by stopping the virus's entry and replication in our cells. It literally stops viruses from infecting our body and works wonders when taken daily. It's such a GREAT immune booster. *Note* A frequent complication with Covid-19 is a cytokine storm. A cytokine storm is when your immune system goes into overdrive which can be fatal. Elderberry does increase the production of cytokines, which is usually not a bad thing but could be harmful with Covid-19. There is too much conflicting information so I can't say I recommend it for treatment of Covid-19. I err on the side of caution and prefer it as prevention tool only.

Nettle tea infusions

Stinging Nettle, Oh my I love it so! Along with every other herbalist and natural medicine lover...Because this is the mother of nutrients when it comes to herbs! If a plant were a multi-vitamin, Stinging Nettle would be it! It fights inflammation and is wonderful for our entire body. It's full of vitamins and minerals and anti-inflammatory properties. It's a broad spectrum herb and can be used for many reasons. It's immune boosting, an anti-spasmodic, anti-histamine, blood building and more. It's also very healing for respiratory illnesses because it decreases mucus. Stinging Nettle also boosts adrenal health, helping your body deal with stress. I prefer buying the dried Stinging Nettle Leaf, it's gentle yet powerful.

Making an infusion is so simple:

· 1 quart of boiling water to 1 ounce of herb

· Let sit for 6-24 hours

· Then strain and refrigerate.

Herbal infusions are very nutritious. They provide large quantities of vitamins and minerals such as magnesium and calcium. They are very simple to make and very effective because they are highly absorbable...No additives or junk. Just nutrients in pure form. Taking vitamins like a whole food multi-vitamin, Vit C and D3/K2 daily preferably food based and non GMO. Magnesium daily goes a long way in preventing Illness as well. I truly hope this information serves you well. Knowledge is power.

There is also a very promising report with treatment of high dose Vit C for Covid-19.

Vitamin C Saves Wuhan Family from COVID-19

by Richard Cheng, M.D., Ph.D.

(OMNS Mar 5, 2020) Ms. N lives in Wuhan, China. She takes special care about the well-being of her entire family including her chronically-ill mother, aged 71. Ms. N has always been interested in nutrition and she recently learned about vitamin C's antiviral effects.

I am an American physician currently residing in Shanghai. I interviewed Ms. N by telephone after I received a forwarded story that she posted on Chinese social media, WeChat. I made an effort to connect with Ms. N to verify the story and below is what she told me.

Ms. N lives with her child in the epicenter of COVID-19 pandemic. She is close to her parents and her brother and his wife. The six of them visit each other on a regular basis. Her mother has diabetes and heart disease with stents placed, in addition to several other chronic illnesses including reflux esophagitis.

Right before the Chinese New Year, around January 21st, her mother developed flu-like symptoms, with a low grade fever of 38C. Based on her knowledge. Ms. N advised all members of the family to take oral vitamin C. She herself has been taking about 20,000 mg daily in divided-up doses. Her mother reluctantly took a smaller dose, probably half or less of what her daughter's been taking.

Her mother's condition was stable for 9-10 days. But on January 30th, without deteriorating, her mother decided to go to Wuhan Union Hospital, Tongji College of Medicine, The Science and Technology University of Central China, a hospital prominent not only in Wuhan, but in all of China. She wanted to check out if she was infected with the Wuhan pneumonia virus. She got her presumption confirmed. At the hospital, she was diagnosed of what became known now as Covid-19 pneumonia. The second day upon admission, her fever started going up, as high as 39.6C. In about 10 days on February 10th she was admitted to the Intensive Care Unit and went on the heart-lung machine as a final attempt to save her life.

At this time Ms. N learned of the clinical trials with vitamin C, administered by infusion (IVC; intravenous vitamin C). Immediately she requested the person in charge on the ICU to use large dose IVC on her mother. The attending physician agreed but would go only to around 10,000 mg. So it happened. After 20 days in ICU, her mother improved and was discharged to a regular ward a few days ago, continuing the IVC treatment, as insisted by Ms. N.

While in hospital, Miss N, her brother and sister-in-law took turns to visit and take care of her mother. They were wearing very simple protection: gloves and masks. Also noted is that while her mother got sick at home, none of the five other family members was wearing any mask for several days. But all of them went on oral vitamin C tablets. None of them developed COVID-19 infection.

So far this is the story of Ms. N. We wish her mother a full and rapid recovery.

In the context of the vast amount of research, clinical studies, case reports and my own decades of experience on vitamin C's use on viral infections, I summarize the story below with a few take-home messages:

1. Vitamin C tablets at high doses daily may be the reason why the family didn't catch the infection.

2. Given her age, history of chronic disease, and the high mortality of COVID-19 on seniors, IVC may have played a large role in her mother's improvement.

3. The news of official IVC clinical trials has definitely had a positive impact in this case, as the attending physician was emboldened to use IVC.

4. A well-functioning immune system is of the utmost importance to keep away the viral infection. And, vitamin C may support the defense against the COVID-19 virus, most importantly in chronically ill patients with a weakened immune system.

(Note from Andrew W. Saul, OMNS Editor-in-Chief: Dr. Richard Cheng is still in China now. He continues to work overtime with expert Chinese doctors and hospitals to facilitate providing intravenous vitamin C for the most seriously ill COVID-19 victims.
